Safety & Environmental Specialist

Description

  • Develop, implement, and audit SHE programs and policies, with the assistance of plant personnel and management.
  • Conduct required regulatory SHE training including but not limited to:  new hire orientation, HAZCOM, PPE, SWPPP, storm water, confined space entry, lock-tag-try, hearing conservation, ergonomics, powered industrial vehicles, electrical safety, NFPA 70E, blood-borne pathogens, respiratory protection, DOT, RCRA, etc.
  • Conduct incident and near-miss investigations and ensure completion of identified corrective actions.
  • Provide expertise to accomplish manufacturing SHE objectives, including the reduction of energy usage, greenhouse gas emissions, reduced water usage, and an incident-free working environment. 
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date measurement, record keeping and reporting processes, including but not limited to OSHA record keeping, environmental calendar, regulatory agency reporting, corporate reporting, key measures reporting, etc.
  • Sitting member of the Regional Operations Committee, plant safety committees, and industry trade associations as required.
  • Serves as the environmental and safety management systems representative while securing and maintaining ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certifications.
  • Secure and maintain all pertinent environmental permits, programs, reporting, and inspection documentation.
  • Serve as technical advisor for facility management, supervision, and associates in matters pertaining to SHE risks and policies. 
  • Provide advice to, and problem-solving for, internal and external customers to ensure compliance with SHE requirements, regulations, and best practices. 
  • Provide urgent response to operational issues 24/7 which includes injuries, near misses, environmental upset conditions, etc.  Must obtain Incident Commander training or 40-hour HAZWOPER certification.
  • Must be open to 25 to 50% travel.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a BS degree in engineering, environmental sciences, environmental/safety management or related discipline is required, four to seven years related SHE experience, preferably with multiple site experience.  Experience with California regulations a plus.  The Safety & Environmental Specialist will have a proven track record and demonstrated success in interfacing with all levels of the organization.  Solid judgment, technical insight and pragmatic strategic vision are also essential, as are strong presentation skills and a high sense of urgency to meet all commitments.  Must be a team player with effective verbal and written communication skills.  Must have the ability to execute projects and directives efficiently.  Experience with incident investigations using root-cause analysis tools such as TapRooT® or 5-Why Analysis.  Computer proficiency in MS Office required.  Experience with 6-sigma, 5S, and/or lean manufacturing preferred.  Ability to deliver results through others.
